From the cap to the cleanout: a chimney inspection, step by step

Questions about your chimney? Call our receptionist, Kari, at 320.414.0191. She picks up weekdays, 9 to 5.

Here's what actually happens when we come out to inspect a chimney, so you know what to expect and what you'll have in hand when we leave.

Our crew finishing a new chimney crown on a tall chimney

Up top

We set the ladder and go up on the roof, because that's where most of the problems are. We look at the rain cap, whether the crown has a proper overhang and drip edge, the brick and the mortar joints, and the flashing where the chimney meets the roof, and we take pictures of all of it.

Down the flue

We look down the flue for buildup and for cracks or gaps in the liner. More than an eighth of an inch of buildup means that flue needs to be swept.

Inside the house

We check the damper, look up into the smoke chamber, and go over the firebrick, the mortar in the firebox and the hearth.

When we leave

You get a written report with the pictures, and anything that needs fixing is written up with it, so you can see the thing you'd be paying to fix.

If any of this sounds like your chimney, call 320.414.0191. We'll come out, climb up, take pictures of what we find and show you before we quote anything.
