Heat is hard on masonry

If you heat with wood, a chimney that runs hot all winter grows and shrinks every day. Any joint that's started to go gets worked a little wider, and the crown, a slab of concrete sitting on top of a stack that's moving, cracks sooner than it would on a fireplace nobody uses. A chimney that burns every day of the winter needs its crown and top courses looked at more often than one that gets lit a few times a year.

Tall stacks on tall roofs

Houses on acreage tend to have taller roofs, and a chimney that stands well above the ridge gets weather on all four sides. The top few feet often need rebuilding while everything below the roof is still solid. That's a staging and masonry job, and it's what we do.

The part of the fireplace nobody sees

Above the damper in a masonry fireplace there's a sloped space called the smoke chamber, where the wide firebox narrows down to the flue. It takes a lot of heat, and on older fireplaces the brick in there is often rough or the mortar has worn out, which catches creosote and makes the fireplace draw worse. You can't see it from the room, so we put a light and a camera up there as part of every fireplace inspection.

Oak Grove: nearly every house stands alone

97% of Oak Grove's homes are single-family detached, the highest share of any town we cover, and 94% are lived in by their owners. Houses spread out on big lots, with nothing next door to break the wind, get driven rain on the chimney from whichever way the storm comes in.

East Bethel: the 1970s house

East Bethel built 27% of its houses in the 1970s, more than any other decade. A 1970s brick chimney is fifty winters in. That's when a thin crown gives out, the top courses start losing their faces, and a clay flue that's never had a camera on it is worth looking at before the next fire.

92 freeze-thaw days a winter, out in the open

The nearest long-record NOAA station is Andover 1N, about seven miles from Oak Grove and eight from East Bethel. It averaged 92 days a winter that went above freezing in the afternoon and below it at night, over its eight complete winters from 2015 to 2023. On a chimney with nothing around it, the wind drives melt water and rain into the weather side, and every one of those nights freezes it.

And cold enough to matter

The same station averaged about 33 nights a winter at zero or colder. Its first freeze came around October 10 and its last around May 13. A crown that's already cracked gets opened a little wider every one of those months, and on a tall stack the top courses go first because they're the part of the chimney the house never warms.

Chimney inspection in East Bethel and Oak Grove

On a tall brick chimney we look at the crown, the top courses on all four sides, the joints, the flashing, and the flue tiles with a camera. Inside, we look at the firebox, the smoke chamber above the damper, and the damper itself, because those take the heat. On a stove or insert we check the liner and the connection at the top. Every flue that shares the chimney gets looked at, and you get the pictures by email.

What we find, in our own numbers

On brick chimneys, 189 of the 234 repair scopes we've written included the crown. Inside the house, the firebox came up in 47 of 418 scopes, the smoke chamber in 23 and the damper in 17. We've done 773 inspections since 2022, and those are company-wide numbers, not an East Bethel or Oak Grove count. They're why we don't stop at the roof.

If a wood stove or insert heats your house through the winter, the chimney should be inspected every year before you start burning. The sweep comes with that inspection: any flue with more than an eighth of an inch of buildup gets swept the same visit. We don't sweep without inspecting, because a clean flue with a cracked tile or a broken crown on top is still a problem.
